Leak Detection
5 Signs You Have a Hidden Water Leak (and What to Do About It)
Published August 3, 2026 • Pipeworks Plumbing & Drain Services
Not every leak announces itself with a puddle on the floor. Some of the most damaging leaks happen slowly, behind walls, under slabs, or inside ceilings — often for weeks before they're noticed. Here are the five signs worth paying attention to.
1. An unexplained increase in your water bill
If your water usage habits haven't changed but your bill has climbed, that's often the earliest and most reliable sign of a hidden leak. Compare a few recent bills — a steady upward trend without an obvious cause is worth investigating.
2. Damp spots or discoloration on walls or ceilings
Water travels before it shows itself. A stain or damp patch on a wall or ceiling usually means the actual leak is somewhere upstream of where you can see it — inside the wall cavity, behind a fixture, or in the floor above.
3. Musty or mouldy odours
Persistent moisture breeds mould and mildew, and their smell is often noticeable before any visible staining appears — especially in enclosed spaces like closets, under cabinets, or in basements.
4. The sound of running water when everything is off
If you can hear water running or dripping inside a wall or under the floor while every tap and appliance in the house is off, that's about as direct a sign as you'll get. Trust it.
5. Low water pressure
A leak upstream of a fixture reduces the volume of water actually reaching that fixture, which can show up as a sudden, unexplained drop in pressure — particularly if it's isolated to one part of the house rather than the whole system.
Why hidden leaks shouldn't wait
Left alone, a hidden leak doesn't just waste water — it can compromise drywall, flooring, and structural wood framing, and create the damp conditions mould needs to take hold. The longer it runs, the more expensive the repair typically becomes.
How professional leak detection works
You don't need to tear open a wall to find a hidden leak. Non-invasive leak detection equipment can locate leaks behind walls and under slabs without unnecessary destruction, pinpointing the source before any repair work begins — saving both time and drywall.
