Drain Cleaning: What Actually Affects the Price

Published August 3, 2026 • Pipeworks Plumbing & Drain Services

"How much does drain cleaning cost?" is one of the most common questions we get — and it's also one of the hardest to answer with a single number, because the price genuinely depends on what's actually happening inside the pipe. Rather than quote a figure that won't match your situation, here's what actually drives the cost up or down.

Snaking vs. hydro-jetting

A drain snake (auger) physically breaks through and pulls out a clog, which works well for most single-fixture blockages — a slow bathroom sink or a clogged toilet trap, for example. Hydro-jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the entire interior wall of the pipe, clearing grease buildup, scale, and debris that a snake would just push past. Jetting takes more time and equipment, so it costs more than snaking — but it's also the more thorough fix for a pipe with a buildup problem rather than a single obstruction.

How severe is the clog

A drain that's slow to empty is a very different job from a drain that's completely blocked and backing up. Severity affects how long the job takes and which tool is appropriate — a minor clog might clear in minutes with a snake, while a fully obstructed line may need jetting, and possibly a camera inspection to confirm the blockage has actually been cleared all the way through.

Branch line vs. main line

A clogged branch line — the pipe serving a single sink, tub, or toilet — is a smaller, more contained job. A main line blockage affects everything connected to it, meaning multiple fixtures in the house can back up at once. Main line work typically requires larger equipment, more time, and sometimes access through a cleanout or vent, all of which add to the cost compared to a branch line clog.

Root intrusion

Older clay or cast iron sewer lines — common in many established Durham Region neighbourhoods — are vulnerable to tree root intrusion, where roots find their way into small cracks or joints and grow into the pipe. Clearing roots is more involved than clearing a standard clog, since it often needs mechanical cutting or jetting strong enough to remove the root mass without damaging the pipe. If roots are a recurring issue, that usually points to a pipe that needs repair rather than repeated cleanings.

Access and pipe condition

Easy access to a cleanout keeps a job simple. Pipes that are hard to reach, or older pipes in poor condition that need to be handled more carefully, can add time to the visit. In some cases, a camera inspection is the right first step to confirm exactly what's going on before quoting the actual work.
